Most pupils miss GCSE targets at two Eastbourne schools

Only a third of pupils at two Eastbourne schools are meeting the national standard for GCSE results, according to recently released official figures.

Just 34 per cent of students at Causeway School achieved at least five A* to C grade GCSEs including English and Maths according to Department for Education data released this month.

The results are the lowest in East Sussex and fall well below the national state-funded school average of 57.1 per cent.

Boys performed significantly worse than girls, with only 27 per cent meeting the standard compared to 40 per cent of girls.

The Eastbourne Academy also performed poorly with only 35 per cent of its pupils gaining at least five A* to C grade GCSEs including English and Maths.

Only 32 per cent of girls at the school met the standard as did 37 per cent of boys.

Both schools saw their results fall from last year. In 2014, 39 per cent of students achieved the national standard at Causeway falling to just 34 per cent in 2015.

The Eastbourne Academy saw results fall by 41 per cent in 2014 to 35 per cent.

Cavendish School also saw its results fall from 60 per cent in 2014 to 56 per cent in 2015.

While Bishop Bell returned above average results – with more than 66 per cent of students meeting the minimum standard in 2015 – it also saw a small decline falling from 70 per cent in 2014.

There was happier news from elsewhere in town as Willingdon School saw 73 per cent of its pupils achieve the standard – well above the national average.

Meanwhile Ratton School achieved the most improved GCSE results in East Sussex, jumping from just 45 per cent in 2014 to an above average 64 per cent.
