A RETIRED lifeboat coxswain who dedicated 37 years of his life to help saving lives off the Sussex coast had the honour of receiving his MBE from the Queen.

Newhaven resident Ian Johns was joined by his wife Pat at Buckingham Palace.

Ian, who retired as coxswain of Newhaven Lifeboat last year, joined the station as a volunteer in 1974 and then took over as coxswain in 2002.

Between March 23, 1974 and March 23, 2011 Ian has been out on 630 services saving 337 lives.

His wife Pat was the volunteer press officer with Newhaven RNLI for 31 years.

Speaking of the memorable day, Ian said, “We had a wonderful day at Buckingham Palace with the family and I am delighted to collect the award as recognition of the whole team at Newhaven plus the wider RNLI.”
