A 104-YEAR-OLD has celebrated her birthday with a visit from the mayor of Eastbourne.

Friends, staff and mayor Carolyn Heaps (above) wished Barbara Mortimer a happy birthday recently and she enjoyed a party at the Emilie Galloway Rest Home, known by many as the Tweed Rest Home, in Silverdale Road.

Barbara moved to Eastbourne around 20 years ago, when her husband John died.

She has lived at the rest home since she moved to the town and very happy there with many good friends.

The remarkable lady still enjoys art classes and recently painted a Christmas decoration at the home.

Other residents have been impressed with her stories of her days as a ‘plotter’ - marking enemy and home troops’ plane and boat positions on a map during the Second World War.

She was born in London and was adopted by her two aunts when she was two-years-old, after her mother died.

Barbara was educated at a convent and she and John had no children of their own. E46565L
