EASTBOURNE’S mayor Carolyn Heaps took the plunge quite literally when she jumped fully dressed in a pool to join disabled swimmers.
The mayor, fully clothed and wearing her chain of office, dived into the deep end of Motcombe Swimming Pool at the annual fun gala, organised by the Sovereign Disabled Swimming Club and staged with the help of the Eastbourne Lions Club.
The gala consisted of three teams of swimming club members of mixed ability as they swam races and played games in a competition to win the Fun Gala Cup.
While her chain of office was being carefully dried, the mayor changed into swim wear and rejoined the swimmers in the pool as a team member. She later chatted to all swimmers as she assisted in the presentation of medals.
The Sovereign Disabled Swimming Club is a registered charity providing valuable recreational swimming facilities in a supportive club atmosphere giving many of the disabled members a feeling of independence and freedom as well as a chance for fun and healthy exercise.
Members have a wide range of disabilities including physical, learning and sensory and the club provides a place for them to build friendships and have fun whilst swimming or exercising in the water.
