Between October 13 and 16 last year, Cunningham broke into a house in Melvill Lane and stole jewellery, a First World War medal and a laptop. The occupants were on holiday at the time of the offence.

A week later on October 20, he attempted to burgle the same house.

He also admitted to breaking into a house in Kings Drive and taking a camera on October 23.

Detective Constable Costin Bonell of the East Sussex Priority Crime Team said, “The sentence given to Mr Cunningham serves as a warning to others about the seriousness of breaking into peoples homes and the likely sentences they can expect when caught.

“He targeted these two addresses with no regard for the occupiers or their possessions some of which were irreplaceable items with significant sentimental value.”
