Cradle Hill Community Primary School in Lexden Road could offer up to 210 more school places for four- to 11-year-olds by September 2017 - if proposals from East Sussex County Council go ahead.

The proposed expansion would see new classrooms and play facilities built at the school to increase the number of school places from 420 to 630.

The school, which is rated good by Ofsted, would be able to offer around 30 extra places in each year group as a result.

“Higher birth rates and expected housing development in the town is predicted to create a shortage of primary school places in the future,” said Fiona Wright, the council’s assistant director for education.

“East Sussex County Council plans years in advance to ensure that every child is offered a suitable place at a primary school and these proposals are a result of that planning process.”

A five-week consultation into the plans begins today (January 22) giving interested parties until Friday, February 26, to give their views.

The results of the consultation will be considered before the council decides to continue with the proposal.

A further four-week consultation will be held next spring if the plans proceed.
