M&S responds to rumours it's opening a new Eastbourne store

Retail giant Marks and Spencer has responded to rumours it could be opening a new store in Eastbourne.

Many were speculating the company could open in the cinema site at Sovereign Harbour, after it emerged the Cineworld will be closing.

However, a spokesperson for M&S told the Herald, “At the moment there are no current plans to open an M&S store at the retail development in Sovereign Harbour.”

It was announced today (November 19) Cineworld is expected to close next year when the company moves to a new cinema at the Arndale Centre in Eastbourne town centre.

The owners, Prudential Assurance, are applying to Eastbourne council for permission to use the site for a retail outlet.

A number of retailers have been suggested to replace it.

M&S – which sells clothing, homeware, furniture, beauty, food, wine, flowers and gifts – currently has a store in the Eastbourne Arndale Centre.
