A competition to find Eastbourne’s most loved business in the run up to Valentine’s Day has finished and Hampden Park shop Paperlane was voted the winner.

The shop in Brassey Parade received the most votes and reviews in the 14 Days of Love competiton, which is part of a nationwide search to find the best business or organisation.

The Farm at Friday Street came second with Will’s Restaurant Bar in Hyde Gardens taking third place.

The Eastbourne local champion David Ruddle said the competition aimed to encourage local people to make an extra effort to show how much they appreciate the town’s businesses.

“For the 14 days leading up to Valentines Day consumers have had the chance to review their favourite local businesses reinvigorating and raising the profile of their local community,” said David.

“During the competition tens of thousands of reviews were added equating to one every eight seconds as the contest reached its crescendo. The locals here in Eastbourne have really done their bit. The top 3 were close fought to the close of voting.”

He added, “It’s been so exciting to see such a huge number of people actively talking about the great local businesses and demonstrating their feelings by voting in the 14 Days of Love. It just goes to show how much our communities are supporting their local independent businesses, which is great news for the British high street especially during difficult economic times.

“Small businesses are the engine room of our economy and lots of local business owners – and loyal staff – are feeling great today because their efforts have been recognised and appreciated by so many of their customers.”

A Paperlane spokesperson said, “It is very touching and a real honour to see how much our customers value what we do.”
