LOOKING BACK: Former bandstand stirs memories

Last week’s photographs of the former Redoubt Bandstand prompted memories and concerns to come flooding in on Facebook.

The bandstand colonnade is all that is left now either side of the Pavilion tea rooms and is surrounded by metal barriers as the council gets ready to demolish it.

There have been calls to restore it to its former glory but that has been ruled out because of the costs involved.

Dave Poole said on Facebook, “Ultimately it’s a sad testament to the cavalier and disrespectful attitude Eastbourne town planners have taken through the years.”

Jackie Jones recalled, “I used to roller skate under here and used the walls as brakes. The marble floor was great for speed but in those days skates had no brakes hence the wall.”

Timothy Hawkins said, “So sad it is not open to the public. Such a cool space.”
