A UNIDENTIFIED object floating in the sea attracted the attention of Eastbourne RNLI.

The large item was spotted on Sunday afternoon (February 20) floating 200 yards off shore at South Cliff, Bexhill.

Concerned members of the public had contacted the Coastguard and officers guided Eastbourne’s Inshore Lifeboat volunteers to the exact location.

In a month when a World War II torpedo was discovered off Eastbourne, the lifeboat crew were relieved to discover the object was a partially submerged log.

However, the lifeboat volunteers said the log was potentially a serious hazard to navigation, particularly for small boats, so the crew took it aboard the lifeboat and returned with it to station.
