Lib Dem’s big brother concerns at meeting

Eastbourne Borough Council has approved changes to its policy regarding the use of surveillance powers aimed at making it much more difficult for council officials to be able to use covert surveillance methods against local residents.

At a recent meeting of the council’s cabinet, the Lib Dem cabinet approved proposals from Councillor Troy Tester, who oversees the use of such powers, to introduce further restrictions on the use of surveillance powers by Eastbourne Borough Council.

He said, “Since I took on this job I’ve been working to make sure these powers, which were intended for use only to investigate serious crime and terrorism threats, are not abused in Eastbourne for petty and trivial matters as so many other local councils have done.

“In fact during the time I’ve been in charge of the surveillance powers we have only used these powers twice.”
