Seaford Leisure Centre operators Wave Leisure Trust have been named ‘Best Employer’ in the 2016 Lewes District Business Awards.

Wave was awarded the title at a prestigious awards ceremony held at Lewes Town Hall with over 200 of the District’s leading business people, sponsors and judges in attendance.

Wave has implemented a number of schemes in recent years to increase the learning and development of their staff, most notably the Trust’s ‘Passionate about People’ HR Strategy and Training Academy.

This programme offers up to 15 staff members a year the ability to take part in a key apprenticeship programme with Wave Leisure Trust in co-operation with Albion in the Community and Swim UK.

The Training Academy ensures that all staff have the opportunity for individual, formalised development plans and progression opportunities including, apprenticeships, permanent contracts and advancement into management roles.

In October 2014 Wave also introduced the Staff Recognition Scheme to celebrate those Team Members who go that one step further across four categories; Customer, Colleague, Above and Beyond and Excellent Performance in an Emergency. Since its inception, Wave’s Team has received over 148 nominations with nearly half of these coming from Members at the Trust’s varied leisure and heritage facilities across East Sussex.

Duncan Kerr, CEO of Wave Leisure, explained how the award was the result of the Trust’s commitment to their ‘Passionate about People’ strategy and continued engagement with its staff and partners along with their shared passion for using activity – in whatever form - to help people overcome challenging situations.

Mr Kerr said: “I’m so proud to accept this award on behalf of Wave; it’s a huge honour to be recognised as the ‘Best Employer’ in the Lewes District.

“Our Trust’s work plays a vital role across the region in promoting health and activity and we could not do it without our incredible staff and partners working alongside a fantastic network of volunteers.

“It’s tremendous to see the impact our staff make, the feedback so far has been overwhelmingly positive and this is so rewarding.”
