Plans to close Hampden Park’s only remaining pub The Parkfield took a bizarre twist this week with the discovery of a covenant protecting it as a public house.

On Wednesday Southern Co-operative wants to take over the pub, owned by Punch Taverns, but a covenant dating back to 1953 set down by the landowners the Chatsfield Estates prevents it from being used as anything other than a public house.

Landlords Owen and Dionne Williams say they will remain at the pub until the issue is sorted.
