Eastbourne scooter rider Keenan Mehmet has been named Best Scooter Rider of the Year in a national competition.
Fifteen-year-old Keenan was presented with the accolade by children’s comic double act Dick and Dom at the Nickelodeon Fruit Shoot Skills Awards 2013, which saw some of the biggest names in sport, music and television come together to celebrate the outstanding skills of young people across the UK.
Dance group Diversity revealed Willingdon School pupil Keenan was the winner during a display on top of the O2 arena.
“Tonight’s awards show has really showcased all of talent that exists in the UK and I’m proud to support such a great event,” said Tom Daley.
Nominees for the awards were selected by a panel of top experts who travelled across the country to find the UK’s most skilled kids.
The awards ceremony follows on from Nickelodeon’s Fruit Shoot Skills Tour, a nationwide shopping centre experience which invited kids to show off their impressive skills. Kids who attended one of the tour events were given the opportunity to enter the Breakthrough Award by submitting a video of them showing their best active skill via the tour or at nick.co.uk/fruitshootskills and then members of the public could vote for their favourite.
Keenan, who lives with his mum Zoe and dad Paul in Friday Street, was ranked fifth in the world last year after the Scootering Association’s World Championships.
He has been riding a scooter since he was given a JD Bug four years ago and is a popular figure at skateparks in the town despite turning professional.
Mum Zoe said the family were with Keenan at the weekend ceremony in London and were all very proud.
“We were all delighted when the result was announced,” said Zoe.
“Keenan absolutely loves his scooter and being part of it all.”
