Looking Back takes a trip down Memory Lane this week back to the evacuation of children from Eastbourne during the Second World War.
This photo has been sent in by Jean Bulwer, nee Harling, and shows children in 1941 or 1942 at Baldock in Hertfordshire.
Mrs Bulwer writes, “The children were mainly from Christchurch School which was in Redoubt Road which was bombed after we left Eastbourne.
“I am the fourth girl from left in the photo and still live in Eastbourne where I was born. I am now aged 84 years.
“We were evacuated in July 1940.
“I hope there are some of them still around and will recognise themselves in this photo.”
Some of the names Mrs Bulwer remembers are Sheila Page, Jean Stevenson, Sheila Pollard, Joan Wood, Yvonne Novis, Joan Judge, Sheila Lavington, Audrey Baldwin, Jean Gilbert, Keith Harling, Graham Wren, Cecil Boniface, Clifford Kenward, Donald Mobbs and William Alchorn.
Looking Back understands many children were evacuated to Cheltenham in the 1940s to escape the German bombing campaign and if readers do have any memories of photographs they would like to share, they can send them to us at Looking Back, Eastbourne Herald, Berkeley House, 26 Gildredge Road, Eastbourne, BN21 4SA.
