If the legend of St Swithin’s Day is to be believed, Eastbourne is set to be hit by a curse of prolonged rainfall.
The prophecy states that if it rains on July 15, wet weather will persist for another 40 days and 40 nights.
The legend states, “If thou dost rain For forty days it will remain St Swithun’s day if thou be fair For forty days ‘twill rain nae mare.”
Does this mean summer is over?
Met Office experts say people should not take the legend to heart and has predicted the forecast for July and August looks set to defy the myth.
Sunny spells and showers are expected today (July 15) but tomorrow is expected to be drier with more summery weather on the way next week.
