The charity’s volunteers Chris and Ellie were first called down to Pevensey Bay after reports of an injured seal on the beach on Friday (November 16).

Unfortunately they were unable to catch the seal, which disappeared back into the sea before they could get anywhere near it, said WRAS (East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service).

Then, just after 8.30am the following day, another call was received from members of the public near the Wish Tower on Eastbourne seafront.

Rescuers attended and, after an assessment, realised it was the same seal.

This time they were able to block the seal’s escape route back to the water and approach and successfully catch the injured marine mammal.

It was transported back to WRAS’s hospital before being taken to RSPCA Mallydams at Hastings where there are specialist seal facilities.

A spokesperson for WRAS said the seal had numerous puncture wounds, but the cause is unclear. It was possibly from fighting with another seal, they said.

WRAS helps wildlife casualities across East Sussex with its team of dedicated volunteers.
