A professor who was born and educated in Eastbourne has lost her battle with cancer.

The funeral mass of Professor Katherine Mary Bryden took place on December 1 at Our Lady of Ransom Church on Grange Road. The service was very well attended, many of the mourners travelling from far and wide to pay tribute Professor Bryden, known to her friends as Mary.

Professor Bryden was born in Leighton Buzzard but spent most of her school days in Eastbourne. She then studied French and English at Reading University. She moved from undergraduate to doctoral student to research fellow to lecturer and eventually to professor. During this time, she gained an international reputation as a highly respected research scholar. Her research bore numerous published articles, papers and many books.

Professor Bryden was frequently in demand as a PhD supervisor, an external examiner, a reviewer, critic and guest speaker on BBC Radio 3 and 4. She held visiting appointments at Newnham College Cambridge and Magdalen College Oxford.

Earlier this year she was able to take up the full-time fellowship awarded to her in 2014 at the Institut d’Etudes Avancées in Paris - researching the literature of the First World War. Sadly, this was interrupted by the return of the cancer which was finally to take her life at St Wilfrid’s Hospice.

She leaves her husband, mother, brother, sister-in-law and nephews.
