Huw Merriman has organised seven debates following Saturday’s announcement by the prime minister that the nation will decide on whether to stay in the EU at a referendum on Thursday, June 23.

He said he arranged the debates to give local people the chance to hear local campaigners deliver the arguments for and against staying in the EU.

Mr Merriman will also provide information to allow people to understand what the proposed changes, or exit, to EU membership, would mean, before deciding how to vote.

He said: “This referendum could possibly be the most important vote of our generation.

“As their MP, I see it as my role to provide the information and the arguments on either side so constituents are able to make up their mind which way to vote.

“The whole point of a referendum is to allow the people, and not politicians, to decide our future membership of the European Union.

“I do not want to influence my constituents’ views one way or another with my own opinions but I do want to help constituents to understand what is proposed.

“I will be chairing all seven debates to ensure the arguments are fair and balanced, and will therefore be neutral in my views beforehand.

“I hope that my constituents will welcome this opportunity to get involved.”
