UPDATE: Sussex Police confirm woman’s body recovered from sea near Eastbourne

The coastguard helicopter joined officers, police, ambulance teams and RNLI crews at the Seven Sisters cliffs at around midday.

A Sussex Police spokeswoman said, “A body of a woman was retrieved from the sea near Seven Sisters Country Park, Seaford, on Monday afternoon (January 27). Sadly the woman was pronounced dead and next of kin have been informed. The death is not being treated as suspicious and the matter has been passed to the coroner’s officer.”

A coastguard spokesperson said in a statement, “HM Coastguard assisted Sussex Police and South East Ambulance Service during an incident at Seven Sisters cliffs in East Sussex.

“Coastguard Rescue Teams from Eastbourne, Newhaven and Birling Gap, the HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter from Lydd and an RNLI lifeboat from Newhaven were sent.”

Newhaven Coastguard said on social media it was called to assist Eastbourne and Birling Gap teams Newhaven Lifeboat and Coastguard Helicopter to “a person in the water in the Cuckmere area”.

The coastguard said, “The person was winched by the helicopter and flown to hospital.”
