Part of Hailsham town centre was closed off last night (Tuesday) and a police operation launched when a suspicious device was found near a military centre.
At around 6.40pm a member of the public found a two foot long piece of pipe with tape around it close to the Air Training Corp in Victoria Road.
The length of pipe was found in the car park and as a precaution bomb disposal officers were called to examine it.
A traffic diversion was set up but no residents were evacuated.
After the device was declared safe, Chief Inspector Dick Coates at Wealden Police said, “Thanks everyone for their patience in Hailsham last night. A suspicious item turned out to be not suspicious. Better to be safe than sorry.”
