PUBLICANS at Hailsham’s King’s Head have fought off stiff competition and been crowned pub of the year by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).
Darren and Helen Lawrence from the pub in South Road won the award for the south East Sussex region. Last year the Hurst Arms in Eastbourne took home the award.
The contest is judged on the quality of the pub’s real ales, service, clientele mix, atmosphere and good value.
The winning pub also has to be sympathetic to CAMRA’s aim that pubs should be considered as important centres of community life and places for informal social drinking.
The evening award presentation at the King’s Head was attended by Miles Jenner, Harveys joint director and head brewer, who brought along a special brew for the evening called Brown Bess. The award was presented by the CAMRA chairman Peter Adams and vice chairman Phil Cozens.
