A Hailsham man who racially abused an Asian shop security guard, who was walking along Terminus Road while off-duty, has been fined.

Allan Graham Morris, 37, of Fletcher Close, pleaded guilty to an offence of racially aggravated intentional harassment, alarm or distress when he appeared before Hastings Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (May 14).

Morris, who is unemployed, verbally attacked the man after his friend asked the guard for change in the town centre on April 17. The victim was unable to oblige, then Morris became racially abusive.

Morris was fined £100 and ordered to pay a £20 victim surcharge within 14 days.

Sergeant Peter Allan, Sussex Police hate crime sergeant, said, “Morris’s conviction sends out a clear signal that we will take a robust approach to those who target individuals based on their race, disability, gender identity, religion or sexual orientation.

“Hate crime can be reported by phoning Sussex Police on 101 - 999 in an emergency. There is also a short form available on our website, www.sussexpolice.uk, for those wishing to report details online.”
