Hailsham Leisure Centre has won the Best Rehabilitation Facility of the Year Award in the 2015 National Fitness Awards.
The win was announced at a glitzy award ceremony on Friday December 4 and Freedom Leisure beat off some stiff competition, including the national Spinal Cord Injury Charity Aspire, renowned for its excellent rehabilitation work.
Hailsham Leisure Centre was one of the first to offer a GP referral service back in 1991: 24 years on, its industry-leading rehab work is outstanding. Each year the centre helps around 1,000 people get back on their feet after receiving treatment for a range of conditions including heart disease, stroke, Parkinson’s Disease and cancer. It also runs specialist services for falls prevention, mental health and obesity.
Its courses are run by specially trained instructors who hold condition-specific qualifications and many courses are run in partnership with leading charities including The Stroke Association and Macmillan Cancer Support.
In fact, Hailsham Leisure Centre was the first provider in the country to implement the first Macmillan Cancer rehab exercise course in 2013.
Stephanie Wadlow, Freedom Leisure Freedom Leisure GP referral coordinator, said, “When we told our members that we were being paid a visit by one of the judges, we were overwhelmed by their support with many coming in especially to tell him in person about their experience here.
“It was nothing less than heart-warming and I have no doubt their personal testimonials helped us gain this Award.”
Beverley Whitney, Freedom Leisure fitness manager, added, “Rehabilitation is a very personal journey and different for everyone. It is our pleasure to work with such a variety of people who put their trust in us to help them recover from illness and injury.
“The work is very rewarding in itself but to have our work recognised with a National Fitness Award is the icing on the cake.”
Cllr Claire Dowling, cabinet member for the public health and community safety at Wealden District Council, said, “I wholeheartedly congratulate the Hailsham Leisure Centre team for this award and I am delighted their work and dedication have been recognised nationally.
“Wealden District Council is very pleased to be supporting Freedom Leisure’s specialist trained staff in this important work with local GPs. We have a very talented team at Hailsham and this award is richly deserved.”
Neil Roberts, Freedom Leisure area manager, said, “The rehabilitation work they do is incredibly effective and their dedication is second to none: this Award is well deserved,
“I thank everyone whose efforts have made Hailsham Leisure Centre an award winning facility.
“I wish them well for continued success for many years to come.”
