A CEREMONY took place in Upper Dicker on Sunday to open a new play area.

Regular visitors will know that the site on the recreation ground, Coldharbour Road, has been cordoned off for some weeks as pieces of new multi-function play equipment were installed.

The addition was revealed when the ribbon was cut at the weekend by Wendy Gibbins, acting head of Park Mead Primary School in Hailsham, and St Bede’s headteacher Dr Richard Maloney.

Mike Garner, Chairman of Arlington Parish Council, which is providing the new play area, said, “The Parish Plan which we prepared in 2008-09 identified the younger age group of two-12 year olds as the one least well served by local facilities, and showed strong support for making new provision for them.

“I’m especially pleased that some of the children’s own ideas have been built into the new playground.

“We’ve also been very lucky to get generous support from the Big Lottery Fund, which gave us £10,000 of the £25,000 we needed, and made us determined to get the new play area up and running before this summer holiday.”

There is now talk of extending the play area in a Phase 2 scheme to include something for the teenagers, plus picnic tables for the parents and grandparents.
