LIGHTS SWITCH-ON: Today, Friday, in Vicarage Field the lights will be switched on at about 6pm by the Mayor and two winners of the Decorate your Christmas Pizza competition run by Dominos. From 5pm Santa will be handing out free sweets to children, Hailsham Community College and Grovelands Community Primary School choirs will be carol singing. There will also be festive refreshments, candy floss and roasted chestnuts. Hailsham FM will be playing Christmas music throughout and Hailsham Parish Church will be hosting their Open Church directly after the switch-on, where there will be background music and free hot drinks served, including hot chocolate.

STREET MARKET: Enjoy the street market tomorrow, Saturday, with its vibrant atmosphere every Saturday in the town centre! Fresh fruit and veg, home-made pastries, fabulous crafts and jewellery, plants, pet items, stylish accessories and more with free parking nearby.

CHRISTMAS FAIR: This is tomorrow, Saturday, at the Charles Hunt Centre, Vicarage Road from 9.30am to noon. There will be a raffle, refreshments, tombola, cakes, bric-a-brac, toys and lots more. WEALDEN BRASS: Tomorrow, Saturday, between 10am and noon, Wealden Brass will be in the Quintins Shopping Centre in Hailsham town centre promoting their forthcoming concert for RAFA on December 9 at the Community Hall between 3pm and 5pm. Pick up tickets now or on the door but be aware this is a very popular event. Tickets are £7, U16s £4, Family two adults and two or more children £17.

CATS CHRISTMAS FAIR: Come along on Sunday for the Cats Protection Centre Christmas Fair at 63 Marshfoot Lane between noon and 3pm. Entry is 50p or a tin of cat food. There will be all sorts of festive and usual stalls, goodies, raffle, chocolate tombola. You can order and collect cakes and wreaths. Refreshments will also be on offer.

FOLK AND BLUES: The Six Bells Folk and Blues Club meets on Tuesday at the Six Bells public house, The Street, Chiddingly from 8pm to 10.30pm. The theme is travel songs and the evening is hosted by Clive Woodman. All welcome. Visit www.6bellsfolk.co.uk for more information.

U3A: The next group meeting is on Tuesday at the Civic Community Hall when East Sussex Foster Care Association will be giving a talk by their own speaker. Visitors welcome at £2 on the door from 2pm for tea and a 2.20pm start.

WOMEN2WOMEN: On Thursday at St Mary’s Parish Church the group is asking whether you would like a white Christmas. If you are, they admit they cannot offer you real snow but can entice you and a friend to come and build and decorate a gingerbread house with a snowy scene. Then the question is ‘to eat, or not to eat.’ The evening will include a reflection on Christmas by Cori Bromfield who works for local government part time whilst studying theology. PHOTOGRAPHIC CLUB: On November 15 Hailsham Photographic Club held Round Two of the Annual Print Competition. Keith Gibson judged this round. Keith has visited Hailsham many times before and is always very welcome. Keith mainly loves landscapes but also does architectural and street photography. There were 69 entries and Keith spent time on each picture giving positive criticism and comments. Results were: Development Class, Keith held back five entries and the four to go through to the final were: V and A Tay by Alan Anderson; Grandma, Look at Me by Liz Cottingham; Hot Pursuit by Tony Lelliott; and Sunset Reflections by Tony Lelliott. Advanced Class, 15 were held back and the seven prints to go through were: Tern Aerial Ballet by Alan Bousfield; Cwn Llan by John Deller; Remembering with Fireworks by Richard Goldsmith; Hot Seats by Gerald Hartley; Turner Gallery Margate by David Mills; Granny’s Bonnet by Janet Monk; and Quistreham Beach by Jack Taylor. Colin Monk thanked Keith and said HPS always look forward to his next visit.

HAILSHAM HISTORY: Paul Endersby has recently completed a second history book, Hailsham and the First World War, as reflected by the Parish Magazine. He has researched the magazine for the period of the war to learn more about how Hailsham responded to the call to arms and the effect it had on both those who enlisted and those who stayed at home. He has also researched other sources to provide additional information. Copies are now available price £5 and are obtainable from him by emailing him at [email protected].
