ANZAC DAY SERVICE: This year’s Anzac Day Commemoration Service is to be held at the Hailsham War Memorial on Sunday from 10.45am and organised by Royal British Legion Hailsham and District Branch. Several local organisations will be taking part in the parade and service mustering in the Charles Hunt Centre at 10.15am. Anzac Day is a national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand, originally observed by both countries on 25 April every year to honour the members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who fought at Gallipoli in the Ottoman Empire during World War I. British forces were also involved at Gallipoli with the (Mediterranean Expeditionary Force) 29th Division which landed on the same day, and Anzac Day now more broadly commemorates all those who served and died in military and peacekeeping operations for their countries. If any members of the public or organisations wish to lay a wreath, cross, posy, chaplet or flowers, there will be a time during the service to do this. HAILSHAM THEATRE PRESENTS: Outside Edge by Richard Harris from Thursday to Saturday, June 9 to 11, at 7.30pm with a Saturday Matinee 2.30pm. Catch Hailsham Theatre’s next production at Summerheath Hall. Picture the scene; the neatly mowed village green, clear blue skies a cricket team in their perfectly pressed whites, tea and sandwiches waiting in the pavilion, loyal wives and girlfriends looking on. Sounds perfect? Think again. There are storm clouds gathering, and not just in the sky. Watch the hilarious sparks begin to fly as the team foolishly try to solve their various marital problems at the same time as winning the game. Richard Harris adapted this play for television as a sitcom for ITV. Doors open 7pm and 2pm, Licensed bar, interval refreshments and cake available. GRASS CUTTING: Following the start of 2015’s grass cutting season, Hailsham Town Council is offering information to help assist residents to understand the grounds maintenance process and its overall responsibilities for grass cutting throughout the town. Hailsham Town Council arranges the contracting for the cutting of grass on behalf of East Sussex County Council for most of the highway verges in Hailsham, which are cut 10 times per year, from April to November. The County Council pays for five of these cuts which is their standard across the county and the Town Council supports this by paying for another five cuts in order to maintain a higher standard of presentation. The Town Council also arranges grass cutting in areas of land owned by the Town Council including Hailsham Country Park, Western Road Recreation Ground, Maurice Thornton Playing Field, Hailsham Cemetery and the Common Pond. It does not make arrangements for grass to be cut on privately owned estates such as Harmers Hay, on developments that have not been adopted by the District, County or Town Council, or on local authority housing estates such as Town Farm, which is the responsibility of Wealden District Council.

MASTERCHEF VISIT: If you have been watching this series of Masterchef you will have seen Peter Bayless, BBC Masterchef Winner in 2006 appearing again when contestants are required to serve celebs and previous winners. Peter will be visiting Hailsham Farmers Market on Saturday June 11 when he will be cooking in support of the Love Your Local Market Campaign. ‘I always try to source local produce whenever I am cooking. It makes so much difference in terms of taste and value,’ says Peter, who lives near Heathfield. ‘Our local Wealden markets provide a particularly good source of the freshest ingredients and seasonal vegetables.’ Peter’s cookery demonstration is part of the nationwide celebrations highlighting the Love Your Local Market campaign. Led by the National Association of British Market Authorities, the aim is to raise the profile of the local markets and encourage people to enjoy locally produced food. The demonstration at Hailsham will take place between 10am to 12.30pm on at the Hailsham Cattle Market site. Wealden Love Your Local Market campaign aims to attract new traders and some markets are offering free or discounted stalls to first-timers. SPRING FAIR: The Cats Protection and Adoption Centre at 63 Marshfoot Lane has its extremely popular Spring Fair on May 8 between noon and 3pm. Entry is 50p or a tin of cat food. There are always new, interesting and unusual stalls to visit, not forgetting a look at all the cats awaiting rehoming.

RED WHITE AND BLUE PARTY: Tickets are now on sale for the Party of the Year. Hailsham FM and Environment Hailsham proudly present a Red White and Blue Party to celebrate the 90th Birthday of HRH Queen Elizabeth II on Saturday June 11 from 7.30pm to 11.30pm at Grovelands School.
