A new group has been formed to help enhance and promote Seaside Recreation Ground.

Friends of Seaside Rec will seek ways of improving the green space with initiatives such as new play equipment, extra planting and improved security.

The group also hopes to encourage more family-friendly events to be held to increase the profile of the only open space in this part of the town. Local residents, supported by ward councillors, set up the group following the successful formation of friends groups elsewhere within the borough.

In December 2012, it was announced that the Big Local initiative had allocated £1 million over a 10-year period to make Devonshire a better place to live, work and visit. Earlier this year, the Driving Devonshire Forward group was also formed and it is umbrella group overseeing the many positive changes within Devonshire.

Councillor Steve Wallis, who represents Devonshire Ward, said, “It’s a fantastic time to set up the Friends of Seaside Rec group as the area has attracted a lot of investment and attention, there certainly is an impetus for improvement.”

Carol Bowman, one of the group’s co-chairs, added, “As someone who lives opposite the rec, and is a frequent visitor, I am pleased to be part of the ‘friends’ and I look forward to working with other residents and stakeholders to improve the area, both in the short and long term.

“We have already held two meetings and a ‘rec walk’ so we have certainly hit the ground running.”
