The college head said pupils have performed superbly under the new, arguably more challenging, 9 to 1 grade system.

With a mix of old and new grading systems, close to 96 per cent of this year’s 118 Year 11 pupils achieved five or more 9 to 4 grades (equivalent 96 per cent A*-C), with 30 per cent of all grades at 9 and 8 (equivalent to A* or better).

Fifty-eight pupils achieved at least five A*-A / 9-7 grades which represented roughly half the year group.

Some 106 pupils (90 per cent) secured at least one 8, 9 or A*.

The college once again celebrated outstanding science results with the percentage of 9 to 7 grades in biology of 93 per cent, chemistry 95 per cent and physics 86 per cent.

Also performing well, pupils in history (which used the old alphabetical system this year) were awarded 90 per cent A* to B grades.

Mr Lawson said, “These excellent GCSE results are a credit to the hard work of the pupils and their teachers who have given them the support and guidance to achieve their aspirations.

Statistics cannot do justice to the way that pupils have exceeded expectations across the ability range and many proud parents will know that their child has a set of grades that do them credit.

“The high number of pupils with a string of grade 8, 9 and A*s testifies to the stretch we can offer the most academic pupils and they will continue to be challenged with our exclusive programme of A-level and Pre-U courses throughout the sixth form.”
