Dear Reader,

The price of your Gazette will rise by 15 pence today.

A decision to increase the cover price is never taken lightly, and particularly not at a time when we know that the strain remains on the money in your pockets.

We are, after all, welcomed each week into thousands of homes in Eastbourne, Hailsham and Seaford.

But, as with most sectors within our business community, the local media industry continues to operate within a challenging market with pressures on both our traditional income streams and on our day-to-day running costs.

This includes a reduction in advertising revenues which have traditionally subsidised the production of the paper.

So if we are to maintain our news gathering teams - and remain as part of the fabric of our communities - we have to be realistic about the price we charge for our newspapers.

Next week’s increase means that we can continue to provide a comprehensive coverage of local life and to bring you the features and platforms that have kept the Gazette in the heart of its communities for more than 150 years.

And we have made a number of changes to freshen up the paper.

The four-page Puzzles section has been moved from the Gazette to its sister paper, the Eastbourne Herald, and isreplaced by a single page of puzzles.

In its place is a three-page feature called “48 Hours”, packed with pictures that have made you weekend so special.

There is also be a new poetry section, giving a weekly platform to the many talented poets out there, an entertainments/what’s on listings page, as well as additional sports coverage.

All that, as well as the best in local news from your area.

For less than half the price of a cup of coffee on the High Street, we still feel the Gazette represents good value for money. We hope you agree and that your loyalty to us will remain as strong as ever.

And, of course, there is a way of reducing considerably what you pay for your Gazette. Dozens of readers have already taken out a subscription and made themselves a huge saving. Why not join them? It would reduce the cost of your paper to 52p, a saving of £9.36 for the year. Either call us on 0844 991 6464 or visit www.subscriptionline.co.uk, follow the easy steps to sign up and we will send you a set of vouchers to be used at local retailers.

In return, we promise to work harder than ever at bringing you the popular package that ensures the Gazette remains one of your weekly essentials.

Best regards,

Keith Ridley,

Editor-in-chief.
