Funeral date announced for young Sussex cricket star

The funeral of cricket star Matthew Hobden, who is believed to have plunged to his death after falling asleep on the roof of a county house on New Year’s Eve, will be held next month.

Police Scotland continue to investigate the death of the 22-year-old Eastbourne-born pace bowler but said there are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances.

His funeral will be on Monday February 1 in a private ceremony attended by family and invited guests only.

A Thanksgiving Service to celebrate Matthew’s life will take place on Friday February 5 at 11am.

That service is open to all.

In a statement on the Sussex Cricket website a spokesperson said, “The wishes of Matthew’s family are that people should not wear black to this event and that no flowers are sent. A collection will be made at the church for the Sussex Cricket Foundation. “

Matthew is believed to have fallen asleep before plunging to his death while celebrating the new year with friends at a country house in Forres, near Inverness.
