Two friends who sat and studied together at college a half century ago are side-by-side in classes once again . Margaret Hopkins and Patricia Kelly became firm friends while training to become teachers at St. Mary’s College Cheltenham in 1963. However, after graduation, their careers and family life took them in different directions. It wasn’t until 1995, the year in which they turned 50, that they were reunited after Margaret’s husband Ted contacted Patricia and invited her to a party.
In recent years, Margaret moved to Seaford and Patricia to Eastbourne. In 2014, they heard about the classes at South Street Art Studios and decided to learn to draw and paint with expert guidance from tutor Paul Clark. Margaret said, “It was a joy for us both to spend every Friday morning sitting in class, encouraging each other, giggling at early efforts, checking what to do for homework and when to complete assignments, just like being back at college 50 years ago!” Photo by Paul Clark.
They enjoyed it so much that they have enrolled in another course at the Studios this year. They both agree that it’s great to be back in such a happy and productive environment with the opportunity to learn new and different skills.
