The news that four restaurants have signed up to open in the £85 million extension to the Arndale Centre in Eastbourne has been described as Father Christmas delivering presents to boost the leisure and night-time economy by the town’s retailers and businesses.
The news was announced just two days before Christmas that top brand restaurants Wagamama, Byron, Chiquito and Frankie and Benny’s have signed-up to the new Eastbourne Arndale extension.
Eastbourne and district Chamber of Commerce boss Christina Ewbank said, “We are delighted. They are bound to prove a big hit with both residents and visitors and help establish the town as the perfect leisure destination.
“The bigger picture is that the shops, cinema and restaurants in the Arndale extension will create hundreds of permanent new jobs for local people. We also expect the construction company building the extension to recruit locally wherever possible.
“There is a genuine and deeply felt ‘feel-good’ factor in the town this Christmas and this is great news for people in every walk of life.
“We are very optimistic about the coming years, as the UK wakes up to the reality that Eastbourne has a youthful and vibrant outlook that helps it stand out in the crowd.”
Wagamama serves Japanese inspired food; Byron is famous for its burgers, Chiquito is the UK’s largest tex-mex chain and Frankie & Benny’s serves American inspired food.
Wagamama will be situated on the ground floor of the 170,000 sq ft scheme while the others will be located on the first floor alongside the entrance to the new nine-screen cinema that will be operated by Cineworld.
The announcement by Legal & General Property, owners of the Arndale Centre, follows the news earlier this year that Nando’s was the first restaurant to sign up for the extension.
Neil Crawford, retail development manager at Legal & General Property, said, “Expanding the variety of high quality, family-friendly leisure options on offer with four more top names coming to the town, this is fantastic news for the extension and for the people of Eastbourne.
“Demand has been very strong and negotiations with other tenants are at an advanced stage. We therefore hope to make further announcements very soon.”
Work is already well underway to carry out the first £2 million phase of the extension to create a contemporary glass atrium at the centre’s west entrance, nearest Banker’s Corner, and upgrade nearby shop fronts and facades to be in keeping with the style of the new extension.
It has built a temporary entrance to allow access to the centre throughout the period to ensure business as usual.
