Eastbourne-based education consultant Mike Dixon has just finished co-editing a major new poetry anthology, ‘Poetry By Heart’ which will be published on October 2.
The book is linked to the highly successful national poetry recitation competition of the same name for pupils aged 14 to 18.
Mike Dixon, a former Head of Park College, said, “I have been involved with ‘Poetry By Heart’ since its launch in 2012.
“Now in its third year we have been delighted by the way schools and colleges up and down the country have embraced the idea of young people reading, understanding, memorising and sharing poetry.
“Our website contains 200 poems, commentaries and resources. In the last couple of years as we have travelled the country supporting schools and colleges many people have said how nice it would be to have a book version of the online anthology of poems complete with stimulating notes on the poems and poets.
“It has been a great pleasure working with my co-editors, Julie Blake, Jean Sprackland and Sir Andrew Motion the former Poet Laureate, to create that book.”
A unique feature of the book is that more than 100 of the poems are accompanied by QR codes which allow the reader access to readings of the poems on their mobile phones – many of them specially recorded by the poets themselves. Mike will be taking part in the launch of the new book at the Birmingham Literature Festival on October 2.
A number of Eastbourne schools have already joined nearly 1,000 other schools and colleges throughout the country in registering for the Poetry By Heart 2015 competition. Winners of school competitions go through to a county final at Brighton.
