A food hamper scheme will be expanded in Seaford to help families in need as food prices soar and the difficult economic situation continues.
Seaford Martello Rotary Club will be able to extend its food hamper scheme to cover the half term holidays thanks to generous donations.
It already provides hampers to families in need before the major holidays and thanks to a generous donation it will now distribute hampers during half term as well.
In the run up to Christmas it handed out ten hampers which were filled with essentials such as porridge oats, cereals and tins of meat, as well as some Christmas food.
Chairman of the projects committee Jim Austin said, “Seaford Martello Rotary Club looked at this and decided to help people in Seaford in a way which might make Christmas just a little more bearable.
“The response was incredible but one particular statement sums up what was achieved by everybody involved. We did not know the people of Seaford cared.’
“The economic state of this country is not getting any easier and more and more people are being identified so we are not stopping the process.
“We will be providing a continual supply of food with the emphasis on hampers prior to each school holiday.”
Seaford Martello Rotary Club said more money had been donated which could be put towards the scheme, including one resident who donated his heating allowance.
Jim added, “We cannot thank them enough because their money is making it possible for us to expand the hamper scheme to provide them not just before the main holidays but also half terms. We will also be looking at the number of hampers we make up.”
There has been a much publicised rise in the number of food banks in the UK in the last few years. The Christian charity the Trussell Trust already runs food banks in Sussex, including in Hailsham. Every day people in the UK go hungry due to redundancy, an unexpected bill while surviving on a low income, static income, high unemployment, rising cost of food and fuel and changes to benefits.
Food banks provide emergency food and support to people experiencing crisis in the UK.
