A bid to build a one bedroom home on the side of a semi-detached bungalow in Kingsmere has fallen foul of town planners.
Both Eastbourne Borough Council planners and a government inspector turned down the plans for a new single storey one bedroom dwelling in Fastnet Close, off Viking Way.
The council refused permission for the development to go ahead in December last year and the inspector dismissed an appeal earlier this month.
The proposal included extending the bungalow to create a one bedroom dwelling with living/dining/kitchen area and shower room/WC.
The area of land on which the new home would have been built is set out as an amenity and parking space.
Dismissing the appeal, inspector Cullum Parker said, “The proposal would erode the open plan nature of the wider estate.
“It would have an adverse impact on the character and appearance of the street scene.
“It also conflicts with national planning policy framework which seeks to ensure that developments are visually attractive as a result of good architecture, layout and appropriate and effective landscaping.
“I find the adverse impacts in terms of the failure to create a high quality building and place, which is fundamental to what the development process should achieve, outweigh the principal benefit of the proposal in contributing a one bedroom dwelling to the housing supply in Eastbourne.”
