‘Hundreds of dead fish along River Cuckmere’, according to report

Environment officials have received a report this morning (Saturday, August 15) about ‘hundreds of dead fish along the River Cuckmere’.

The Environment Agency said it has had officers visit the site, near Seven Sisters Country Park, to investigate but they have been unable to substantiate the report as of yet.

A spokesperson from the Environment Agency said, “We have received a report this morning of hundreds of dead fish along the River Cuckmere, near the Seven Sisters Country Park.

“Environment Agency officers, including a Fishery officer, have attended the site and, as yet, have not been able to substantiate the report. We will continue to investigate and monitor the situation closely.

“If anyone sees or knows of any further information to please call our free incident hotline number on 0800 80 70 60.

”We’ve been dealing with numerous reports of fish in distress, due to recent weather conditions leaving many water bodies with low oxygen levels.”

Lewes MP Maria Caulfield raised the issue on Twitter on Friday night (August 14).
