The project from Plastic Free Eastbourne, which launches today (October 23), involves individuals or groups volunteering to adopt a particular section of beach, cleaning it and monitoring the debris collected.

Eastbourne beach is about nine kilometres long, and divided into 93 separate beaches by the groynes – this means volunteers can choose to care for their own particular beach.

Here are the principles of the campaign:

• A beach may have a number of adopters - for examples a school, a hotel, a shop or business, individuals and families, or political representatives such as local councillors.

• The purpose is to care for the wellbeing of the beach by clearing and recording litter.

• There will be no legal liability - for example, you will not have the right to ‘own’ your adopted beach, and the council will not be charging you for this adoption.

• The adopters will be expected to be aware of each other and are encouraged to liaise.

• The commitment lasts as long as the adopter wishes.

• The beach owner is Eastbourne Borough Council as far down to the sea as the mean low water mark.

Plastic Free Eastbourne has had a great deal of interest from people wanting to care for the seaside.

This is illustrated by the thousands of hours people have spent on its beach cleans.

It says this has been evident even during the Covid-19 pandemic - people have shown an interest in caring for the beach.
