Engineer wins a £92,000 Jaguar in competition

An East Sussex ventilation fitter who kept running out of time to play a sports car competition has seen his persistence pay off after scooping a brand new £92,000 Jaguar.

Peter Franklin, a supervisor at E & S Heating & Ventilation, in Hailsham, first played with Best of the Best in March and came so close to winning that he was awarded £250 credit to play again.

Not really believing his luck, the 62-year-old, who could have played online at, kept returning to Best of the Best stands because he wanted to talk to staff about the credit before he played again.

After twice running out of time, Peter was fortuitously sent off to Dubai for work and made time before his flight to talk to the staff on the BOTB stand at Gatwick Airport.

And the rest, he says, is history, as his persistence paid off and Peter, who lives in Eastbourne, was surprised at work last week by BOTB founder William Hindmarch with a brand new Jaguar XJ-R.

“I got really close when I played in March and received £250 credit and since then I have been trying to get to a stall but never had time to stop,” he said.

“We went on a family holiday so I tried to get to the stall but our flight was called and I had to go. So when I got sent to Dubai for work I made sure I got there in plenty of time to go and talk to a sales person about the credit.

“They were great and I probably got carried away as I was there on my own but it paid off.”

Peter, who has worked with the firm for 41 years, was accompanied outside to see the brand new Jaguar by many of his colleagues who all gave him a resounding cheer when they saw the luxury car outside the gates.

“It was such a lovely experience, it lifted everyone at work. These things always happen to someone else so it was great for all of them to see that it can happen to someone like me and someone like them.”

Peter ‘FaceTimed’ his wife who was at work as a hairdresser at Beyond the Fringe, in Hailsham, to share the good news and she called over all her colleagues and customers to see the car.

She was so excited and exclamations of ‘oh my God’ can be heard 25 times during the brief conversation.

Peter, who does a lot of driving for work, says he likes to have a nice car to drive in his own time.

“I do a lot of miles in the car for work but I like to have a nice car to drive at home so we can enjoy going wherever we want and not be charging up the motorway all the time,” he said.

Will Hindmarch, who had the joy of breaking the news to Peter , said, “Peter was such a lovely winner and it was great to see all his colleagues so happy for him.

“As Peter says himself it just goes to show anyone can win with Best of the Best and that car of your dreams can become a reality.”
