Eastbourne Theatres - Where are they? What's on? When does the Congress Theatre reopen?

Eastbourne Theatres are comprised of the Devonshire Park Theatre, Winter Garden and Congress Theatre all based in the heart of Eastbourne's cultural quarter, a short walk from the seafront.

Combined the theatres boast a capacity of more than 3,500 seats and host many touring productions.

The Devonshire Park Theatre is a Grade II listed building designed by Henry Currey, built in 1884 and further improved by celebrated theatre architect Frank Matcham in 1903.

It is one of the best examples of small Victorian theatre in the country.

Dubbed ‘the Playhouse in the Park’ the range of work presented at the Devonshire Park Theatre includes major touring productions by producers and theatre companies including Bill Kenwright, David Pugh, Kneehigh Theatre and more.

Eastbourne Theatres also produces its own pantomime, plays and musical productions at the Devonshire Park Theatre.

The Congress Theatre is temporarily closed while work takes place on major refurbishment as part of the £49 million pound Devonshire Park Project due for completion in spring 2019.

It’s a Grade II* listed, purpose built, theatre and conference venue designed by Bryan and Norman Westwood Architects and built in 1963.

The largest theatre on the south coast, the Congress Theatre is host to touring West End musicals and plays, ballet, opera, comedy and live music.

The Winter Garden is also temporarily closed while work takes place on major refurbishment as part of the £49 million pound Devonshire Park Project due for completion in spring 2019.

Another Grade II listed building, the Winter Garden was designed by architect Henry Currey and built by the seventh Duke of Devonshire in 1875.

This historic building consists of two main parts - the Floral Hall, originally used as a skating rink in winter and concert hall in summer, and the Gold Room.

Both parts are now used for performances, cabaret style events, dinner dances and as conference venues.

Nearest car park: The venue’s closest car park is on College Road (80 College Rd, Eastbourne BN21 4JJ) with 200 parking spaces, this is pay and display during the day and free after 6.30pm. There is also plentiful on-street parking which is free after 6pm.

A limited number of disabled parking spaces are situated directly in front of the Devonshire Park Theatre.

Due to the ongoing site works around the Congress Theatre and Winter Garden, it is advised that patrons leave plenty of time to park their cars and walk to the Devonshire Park Theatre.
