The potential models include a gull and a sculpture made using burnt two pence pieces from the Eastbourne Pier fire in 2014.

Eastbourne Borough Council launched a competition to create a piece of public art marking the community’s overwhelming support for the pier after the blaze.

Artists and designers were invited to submit a design marking the fire which destroyed a third of the Grade II Victorian structure but was extinguished before it spread further.

Council leader David Tutt said, “It was heartbreaking to see the flames and smoke on Eastbourne Pier and a very sad day for many of us.

“However, there is so much to celebrate about the way the town responded to this awful event, from the tireless work of the fire services to the rallying spirit of residents and businesses in the aftermath.

“We want to install a piece of art that captures the positives that have come from that awful day.”

Entrants were encouraged to use materials recovered from the fire such as structural steel, timber decking and melted two pence pieces.

The artwork will be located in a prominent and suitable space on the seafront.

A grant of £2,000 will be available to the winner to develop their design and a further £20,000 to create and install the final artwork.

A specially-convened panel has assessed the entries and come up with a shortlist of designs for further public consultation.
