The all weather lifeboat and its crew was sent to the incident in The Channel after receiving a report from a light aircraft at around 5.20pm.

An RNLI spokesman confirmed that it was a false alarm with good intent and that what was believed to be an upturned dinghy was in fact a piece of plastic floating in the water.

The piece of plastic was recovered before the crew headed back to the station.
