Eastbourne lifeboat called out twice in freezing conditions

Eastbourne’s lifeboat crews were called in to action twice on Tuesday night.

The crews of the all weather and inshore boats were taking part in training and assessments when they received calls for help from Dover Coastguard.

The first call was shortly before 6pm after reports of a person in the sea west of Eastbourne Pier.

The person was found ashore and in the custody of police and coastguards.

A second request to launch came in at 9.10pm after a crew member was taken ill on board a yacht off Beachy Head as it made its way to the Solent.

Volunteer crew members including Dr Stephen Lytton and paramedic Guy Emery launched into the freezing night.

The poorly man was transferred to the lifeboat and taken to Sovereign Harbour where an ambulance was waiting to take him on to Eastbourne District General Hospital.
