Eastbourne Labour Party has welcomed Jeremy Corbyn as new leader.
Members of the town’s Labour branch welcomed their new leader and deputy leader following the results announced on Saturday (September 12).
In a short statement on Twitter, a spokesman for Eastbourne Labour Party said, “Congratulations to Jeremy Corbyn and Tom Watson as new leader and deputy leader of the Labour Party.”
Originally a outsider, Mr Corbyn won his new position with the support of nearly 60 per cent of voters.
Yesterday Mr Corbyn appointed Labour’s new Shadow Cabinet.
Jake Lambert, Labour Parliamentary candidate for Eastbourne at the last election said, “An exciting team assembled by Jeremy Corbyn to take the fight to the Tories. Bring on the next canvassing session.”
Mr Lambert, who was at the leadership announcements on Saturday, however voiced some concerns about a lack of women in the top roles of the party.
He said, “While our policy won’t be as ‘Socialist Workers Party’ as the scaremongers say, unfortunately our gender balance is.
“I do think it’s an error not to have any women at the top. Not like the party is short of talented women.
“It is a centuries old injustice, an inequality based on tradition and prejudice. I’m in the Labour Party to fight those.”
