Eastbourne homeowners have been warned to be on the look out for bogus callers posing as water inspectors.
South East Water is warning customers to check the identity of callers claiming to be from the company due to concerns over bogus caller crimes.
The company says all its staff or contractors will carry ID, wear branded uniforms and drive vans marked with South East Water logos when visiting houses.
Customer services director Steve George said, “Distraction burglary is a despicable crime committed on the most vulnerable and trusting people in our society. We want everyone to be safe in their homes, so they should never let anyone in unless they are absolutely sure they are genuine.
“Quite often, they [bogus callers] use the phrase ‘water board’ which should immediately arouse suspicion because this is not a phrase that has been used for many years.
“These criminals can sometimes be quite convincing, so you don’t have to be vulnerable to fall victim to a bogus caller.
“If members of our field teams or our contractor, Clancy Docwra, need to enter your home, they will be happy to wait while you check their ID. Remember if in doubt keep them out.”
