A football fan from Eastbourne says although the violent exchanges between England and Russian fans were terrifying at the weekend, he and his friends have enjoyed a beer with some Russian supporters.

Former Eastbourne College student Harry Clarke said the fighting was unpleasant but he and his friends had met some friendly Russian fans after Saturday’s match.

“We met with a few Russians fans who were lovely and we shared a few beers, sang some songs and shook hands and wished each other good luck for the game,” said Harry.

“Once we left Marseille we went to Lyon and met a group of about 10 Icelandic fans who were also absolutely great. We were teaching them our England songs for them to sing and they were also teaching us their songs.

“There has been a huge difference in Lyon and St Etienne compared to Marseille.

“We went from genuinely fearing for our safety to feeling extremely safe and among friends and fellow fans supporting football and equally passionate about their country.”

Harry said he and his friends watched in horror as Russian fans threw bottles, tables and chairs at English fans in the centre of Marseille on Saturday ahead of England’s match with Russia which ended in a 1-1- draw.

“There seemed to be a stampede and all the Russian fans came at us throwing things,” said Harry.

“We had to get away to safety as quickly as we could. We now realise it was the organised gang of Russian hooligans behind that attack.”
