Eastbourne Food Bank is hoping for a little miracle this Christmas.

It urgently needs to find the commercial rent on a new home to cater for the 750 people who rely on help from the charity to make ends meet.

Its current home in Cornfield Lane is being redeveloped and the 75 volunteers and 4 full-time staff need to secure a new base as quickly as possible.

The Christmas period sees a 100 per cent increase in requests for help. The Food Bank expects to give away almost 10 tonnes of food, about twice as much as other months.

Operations director Howard Wardle said the search for a new home was reaching a critical stage.

He said, “We are hugely grateful to the Blackwater Road United Reformed Church, who has allowed us to operate from its premises rent free for 3.5 years.”

“Their planned development means it is now time for us to move on. We have found premises but need to secure this by finding a commercial rent to enable us to continue the work we are doing,” Howard said.

Their current home is gearing up for its busiest period of the year. Around 150 families will be receiving food parcels with a seasonal flavour over the coming weeks. Mince pies, Christmas puddings and crackers are top of shopping list

“There are more than 200 children who will enjoy a decent Christmas lunch thanks to the generosity of the local community, churches and supermarkets,” Howard said.

“Financial donations are extremely welcome. Alongside a large rent we also have to cover our increased fuel costs as we collect food and deliver hampers,” he added.
