Eastbourne avoids changes as retailer closes 134 stores

Eastbourne is likely to avoid any changes as a major retailer reveals plans to close more than 134 stores across the UK.

Dixons Carphone plans to merge the majority of its Currys and PC World and Carphone Warehouse stores into single three-in-one branches – leading to closure of 134 stores in Ireland and the UK.

Eastbourne, which already has a single three-in-one branch in Broadwater Way after the closure of Carphone Warehouse and Currys in the Arndale Centre in an earlier reorganisation, is unlikely to be affected by the mergers.

The chain claims the reorganisation – which is expected to cost up to £120 million – will not lead to any job losses as staff will be moved to the new stores.

The group expects the changes to increase end of year profits by £20m by 2017.

Seb James, group chief executive, said, “Following the merger, it has become clear to us that customers really like our fully refurbished three-in-one store concept.”
