Here’s a run down of the candidates standing in the Sovereign ward:
David Elkin (Conservative)
David says he believes in delivering value for hard earned money which is the council tax and residents deserve and are entitled to quality services whatever their requirements may be. He also believes county councillors should be investing to create quality jobs so families can prosper and have choice in their lives and for those that have worked all their lives and paid their dues the council should be providing top quality care services in later life. He says he is very proud to be British and questions why the country should tie itself to the EU and says a referendum is needed. On immigration David believes that with the massive demand on both jobs and housing the county is just unable to cope with any added pressures and needs to be far more selective in the future.
Richard Goude (Labour)
Richard is a long time Labour campaigner and believes families with children will be on average £891 worse off this year, according to the respected Institute for Fiscal Studies. He says the town has already seen the effect at the DGH where maternity services have been downgraded and believes the authorities should scrap the £3 billion pound top-down re-organisation and spend the money on front-line services. He believes in getting the economy moving again by repairing roads and insulating homes through simple shovel-ready projects which at a stroke put people back into work. He also believes the county council urgently needs to build a new primary school in Eastbourne to accommodate the growth in population.
Robert Harper (UKIP)
