Drivers complain of chaos as roadworks start on busy Eastbourne road

A major road improvement scheme which has closed a busy Eastbourne road today (Tuesday) has left drivers fuming.

Cross Levels Way between the Rodmill and Lottbridge Drove roundabouts was due to close from 9am-4pm three days this week for essential surfacing works.

But the schedule for micros asphalt surfacing work was changed so the road would close between 7am and 7pm today (Tuesday), tomorrow and Thursday.

Motorists have taken to social media saying that due to the closure, other routes into the town are at a standstill.

PC Elliott at Eastbourne Police said on Twitter it was gridlock on most roads and Inspector Mark Rosser described it as chaos.

Taxi driver Ian Cooke said he could see road rage incidents turning into riots at 5pm in the busy rush hour period.

A county council spokesperson said, “Unfortunately the works at Cross Levels Way in Eastbourne have had to be undertaken during the day due to the type of treatment.

“We are aware of the situation with traffic and are monitoring to resolve the issues as soon as we can. We apologise for the inconvenience.”

The work is being carried out under a road closure with a signed diversion route.

The works will be split into two phases: Phase 1 will be from Sainsburys Roundabout to Lottbridge Roundabout and Phase 2 from Rodmill Roundabout to Sainsburys Roundabout with gatemen providing access to Sussex Downs College and Eastbourne Sports Park

Traffic will be diverted via the A2290 Lottbridge Drove, A259 Seaside, A2021 Whitley Road, A2021 Kings Drive and vice versa.
